Misogyny
in hip hop culture is a reflection of American culture that is mostly male
dominated. Hip Hop refers to lyrics, videos or other aspects of hip hop culture
that support, glorify, justify, or normalize the objectification, exploitation,
or victimization of women. Although there are many artist that make positive
music they are over shadowed by the negative songs that have no true meaning
besides a nice groove. The lyrical content are obscene and promote violence
towards women. Misogyny is often used in hip hop culture by male rappers for
authenticity and credibility. Since most rappers must have a male bravado or
reputation of a "gangster" or a "pimp" then this only
further glorifies the lifestyle and the idea of Misogyny. The most common
reason it is used is that male rappers want to appear masculine. It's all about
building an image as well as internalizing a negative stereotype about women
that are predominant in American society. It has been argued that misogyny in
hip hop culture is only an outgrowth of the cultural acceptance of misogyny
at-large. Gangster rap has been critically ashamed of using misogyny in its
course. One of the first Rappers to ever say the word "Bitch" was "Too
$hort" from Oakland California. He is portrayed as a pimp and he one of the
first rappers to use profanity on a record. Although Too $hort may have been
the first to say the word, it is in incorporated into the culture and into the
lyrics. The lyrics of gangster rap are hateful but they do not indeed represent
a trend in black popular culture. It has been identified that there are five
common misogynistic themes in rap lyrics: derogatory naming and shaming of
women, sexual objectification of women, legitimating of violence against women,
distrust of women, and celebration of prostitution and pimping. Men are praised
if they abuse and exploit women. These insults seek to degrade women and keep
them "in their place". Sexual objectification is the most common
misogynistic theme in rap music. Women are portrayed as good only for sex. Dr.
Dre raps: “Bitches ain’t shit but hoes and tricks / Lick on these nuts and suck
the dick / Get’s the fuck out after you’re done / And I hops in my ride to make
a quick run.” — Dr. Dre, Bitches Ain't Shit That was an example from the early
years of hip hop. Today in our society hip hop misogynists culture has
increased with artists such as 2 Chainz and Tyga are one of the main “rappers”
who do so in objectifying women with their song. 2 Chainz raps: “She got a big
booty, so I call her big booty” -2Chainz, birthday song 2 chainz uses on one
common type of misogyny themes which is obviously showing the sexual
objectification of women. Even female such as Nicki Minaj , uses misogyny in
her songs. With titles like “Stupid Hoe” and lines like “Bitches better get on
they knees,” and “If I had a dick, I would pull it out and piss on 'em
[bitches],” This just makes harder for misogyny in hip hop culture to disappear
as Nicki Minaj being a female herself is agreeing with the misogynist views and
how females should be treated particular in America
